Esteemed guests, The context within which higher education currently operates in South Africa is important. Access to universities continues to be one of the greatest national challenges facing our country. Across the sector, demand for higher education significantly exceeds available space. Recent national discussions have once again highlighted the immense pressure placed on universities due to increasing application numbers and limited institutional capacity.
At the North-West University alone, we received more than 420 000 applications for the 2026 academic year.
