Acrylic painting offers a versatile medium for artists, as it is a quicker and more accessible medium than oil paint, and technique and quality of art works can be greatly enhanced through developing skills and conceptual ability within our short course. Participants become more conversant with the versatility and convenience that acrylics offer, and physically explore the possibilities of different genres in acrylic paintings, using a variety of approaches and techniques. Through this short course, participants will be provided the opportunity to master techniques in the medium and contributes to the ability to make decisions about personal preferences with regards to material selection, colour application, brushwork, lighting, perspective, and conceptual development of themes and subject matter.

The admission requirement for this short course is NQF Level 4 education (matriculation or equivalent) and basic drawing skills.

Oil painting is the most durable painting medium, which many aspiring and established artists would like to use. Our short learning programme provides participants with the basic skills and knowledge to execute a high standard of oil paintings. The North-West University, affiliated with talented artists and presenters, is in a position to offer this possibility to hone oil painting technique in an accessible way at an affordable price and acceptable part-time schedule through a credible programme. The programme provides the opportunity for enhancement of the quality of artworks in this medium and contributes to improving skill in preparing canvasses, brushwork technique, the use of art principles, and conceptual thinking.

Printmaking provides participants with the basic skills and knowledge to create traditional graphic art in linocuts, mono-prints, and Perspex prints, and offers participants a convenient way to learn the basics of printmaking at an affordable price and acceptable part-time schedule, using a graphic press to create prints. The short course aims to enable participants to understand theories and principles of printmaking, apply various methods and techniques practically, understand ethics involved in the practice, and employ contextual problem solving.
