Thank you for your interest in studying at the NWU School of Music. Please read the following instructions carefully to ensure a smooth application process.

 

The process to be admitted to undergraduate music study at North-West University consists of two successive parts, with a separate application for each of these parts:

FIRST — a prospective student must apply for general admission to North-West University (see 1. below).

THEN — a prospective student must apply for an audition and other selection procedures at the NWU School of Music (see 2.2 below).

The selection process will only start once both these applications have been completed.

1. Application for admission to North-West University

Visit the NWU website for full information and instructions to submit your online application.

The closing date for applications for all undergraduate music programmes is 31 JULY AUGUST 2021.

After you’ve completed your application, the Admissions Office will send a confirmation letter by e-mail in the following 2-3 weeks. Please contact the following people at the Admissions Office if you haven’t received the confirmation after 3 weeks:

2. Selection

2.1 Admission requirements for undergraduate music programmes

Diploma in Music

  • Completed Matric / National Senior Certificate with an endorsement for diploma study
  • APS of at least 18
  • At least 50% (level 4) for English in Grade 12
  • Successful completion of two audition rounds:
    Round 1 — Minimum requirements and practical audition
    Round 2 — Language tests

BA Music & Society

  • Completed Matric / National Senior Certificate with an endorsement for degree study, and an APS of at least 21
    OR
    A diploma in music or an equivalent qualification in which the modules for the final year have been passed with an average of at least 60%
  • At least 50% (level 4) for English in Grade 12
  • Successful completion of two audition rounds:
    Round 1 — Minimum requirements and practical audition (Grade 3 standard)
    Round 2 — Language tests

Baccalaureus Musicae (BMus)

  • Completed Matric / National Senior Certificate with an endorsement for degree study
  • APS of at least 24
  • Successful completion of two audition rounds:
    Round 1 — Minimum requirements and practical audition (Grade 6 standard)
    Round 2 — Language tests

 

2.2 Application for selection at the NWU School of Music

After application has been made for general admission to North-West University, prospective students must also apply for selection at the NWU School of Music by completing the online application form by the closing date of 31 JULY AUGUST 2021.

 

2.3 Audition & selection process

Auditions and selection this year will only be conducted online. In the first round of selection, candidates will be selected based on the minimum entry requirements and their audition videos.

Candidates must create two audition videos per instrument that comply with the selection requirements (see 2.4 below) of the specific programme. Before the videos are uploaded/submitted each must be renamed to:

NAME & SURNAME – STUDENT NUMBER – INSTRUMENT – VIDEO 1 OR 2
e.g. John Legend – 35145967 – piano – video 1

Use one of the following services to upload/send your videos:

  2. Send with WeTransfer to jane.muller@nwu.ac.za
  3. Send with WhatsApp to 073 874-9662

Receipt of the application for selection and the audition videos will be confirmed by e-mail within 7 working days after submission of the application. Candidates could be expected to do an additional virtual audition should the selection panel require it.

All candidates will be informed by 30 AUGUST SEPTEMBER 2021 whether they had been selected to proceed with the second round, or not. During the second round of selection candidates will write language and/or theory tests.
