Founded in 2010 at the North-West University's Vanderbijlpark Campus, Optentia has grown into a leading interdisciplinary research unit dedicated to advancing research that contributes to human development, social inclusion and sustainable well-being. Over the past 15 years, the unit has built a strong national and international reputation for research excellence, collaboration and capacity development.

Increasing the number of National Research Foundation (NRF)-rated researchers from one in 2010 to ten today, including several B-rated researchers.
Producing graduates and researchers who have gone on to hold academic positions and leadership roles at leading universities in South Africa and abroad.
Providing researchers with access to advanced research tools, including Elicit AI, Mplus, Jamovi, JASP, ASReview, ATLAS.ti and SPSS, together with specialised training in their use.

Leadership
Since 1 January 2026, Optentia has been led by Professor Blessed Ngwenya, Research Director and Associate Professor in Inclusion and Decolonial Praxis.
Professor Ngwenya holds advanced qualifications in Communication and Media Studies and completed his DPhil in Socio-Legal Studies at the University of Oxford. His research focuses on decoloniality, qualitative inquiry, media representation, cultural systems and Global South epistemologies. He has published extensively in leading international journals and edited volumes and serves as Associate Editor of the International Journal of Qualitative Methods. He is also the author of The Myth of Independence: Media Power and Hegemony in South Africa (Routledge).
Beyond academia, Professor Ngwenya has led impactful community initiatives, including founding community radio stations and directing the Tswala! Digital Divide Project. His leadership reflects a commitment to research excellence, inclusive scholarship and socially engaged research that responds to the needs and realities of Global South contexts.
Under his leadership, Optentia continues to build on its strong foundation while advancing innovative, interdisciplinary research with lasting local and global impact.
