Public Administration

Twentieth-century and contemporary South African history, cultural history and heritage studies. Areas of specialisation include military, gender, environmental, cultural and social history, and heritage management.

Historical and Heritage Studies

Unites a broad range of topical debates from urban anthropology, to heritage, to environmental anthropology, to alternative democracy, to risk and securitization.

Modernity and Coloniality

Focuses on the development of the state, different political ideologies and forms of government, and the status of interaction between the citizens and the government, by addressing contemporary political issues in South Africa and the rest of the world.


These two aspects entail researching the theory and practice relating to Corporate Social Investment, Socially Responsible Investment and Responsible Corporate Citizenship, as well as community development and community engagement.

Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainable Development

The research areas include industrial, medical, clinical, political and neuro sociology; gender, feminist, and lesbian and gay studies; queer theory; and social research methodology.
