ITLT Show and tell

 

Welcome to the Faculty of Humanities Innovative Teaching and Learning with Technology (ITLT) show and tell week 2021. During the course of this week, we will introduce the ITLT committee to the staff of the Faculty of Humanities and showcase some innovative teaching and learning approaches and tools that may be helpful to faculty members. During the show and tell week, staff are provided with content that will inspire and excite them to creatively think about using technology within their teaching and learning practices. We hope you enjoy the show and tell videos from members within and outside the Faculty of Humanities.

Websites as a teaching tool

Presented by Mr André Gouws from School of Communication

In this video, Mr Gouws shares his use of websites to teach Journalism within an Honours module. The website covers stories in the broader NWU community, and students use their knowledge of digital tools required by industry to apply theory to practice. The content created by students serve three functions 1) to provide practical experience to students, 2) to assess students' knowledge and skills and 3) to serve the NWU community through community engagement. This video aims to stimulate critical and creative thinking regarding using websites as a teaching, assessment and community engagement tool.

Using TikTok as an assessment tool

In this video Mrs du Plessis shares her insights on using TikTok in her modules to equip students with digital skills that can contribute to their future careers. The video explores the use of TikTok as a teaching tool and provides examples of the content created by students. This video aims to stimulate critical and creative thinking regarding social media as a teaching, assessment and skills development tool.

Universal Design for Learning

Presented by Dr Liandi van den Berg from School of Management Sciences

In this video, Dr van den Berg shares her insights on using Universal Design for Learning in her curriculum to support different forms of learning. More insight is given regarding the applicability of UDL within the online learning environment and how UDL can be implemented in your classroom. This video aims to introduce staff to the UDL principle as an approach to teaching and learning that engages students' different learning preferences.

Digitizing rubrics for assessments

Presented by Mr Koos de Villiers from School of Communication

In this video, Mr de Villiers provides a tutorial on using Adobe Acrobat Pro to digitize PDF rubrics to provide feedback and set up drop-down menus with marks that add up points given to students automatically. This video offers the lecturers a tool that can easily streamline the marking process through digital tools.
