Monique Hellenberg is an award-winning vocalist with a versatile yet distinctive sound. She is currently a Lecturer in CCM Voice at North-West University.
As the winner (jazz category) of the SAMRO Overseas Scholarship for Singers (2007), additional studies have included Circlesongs at the Omega Institute for Holistic Studies in Rhinebeck, New York (under the guidance of Bobby McFerrin), son music studies in Havana, Cuba (with Cuban band, Sierra Maestra), and musical theatre studies in Livorno, Italy (under the guidance of Canadian vocal coach, Richard Link).
As a recording artist, Hellenberg gained both local and international recognition as a featured vocalist on Goldfish’s Number one hit song, ‘This Is How It Goes’, in 2007. and has also performed as one of 100 contestants on “The Voice” (2017). Her original R&B single ‘Saw It, Wrote It, Got It’ was voted into the Top Ten on Heart 104.9FM CTM Top40 Chart in 2023. On the live performance scene, Monique has sung in several countries including Austria, Bahrain, China, Ghana, Seychelles, and the USA. She currently performs at events with various jazz and pop ensembles and has also featured with orchestras conducted by Richard Cock, et al.
Alongside her performance career, Hellenberg has been working as a music educator for the past twenty-five years. She has a passion for nurturing and developing her students’ unique voices and equipping them with practical music industry skills that can be applied in today’s demanding and ever-evolving world. Former students have included Richard Link (winner of “The Voice SA 2016”), Zoe Modiga, Langa Mavuso, Manana and Emma De Goede (from “Emerger”). She is also proud to have recently served as the secretary for NPO, the South African Jazz Education (SAJE).
As an advocate for women’s voices in music and beyond, Hellenberg has just completed her Master’s studies which included four recitals, as well as her dissertation titled: “An Exploration of the Music & Singing Techniques of Four Female South African Jazz Singer-Songwriters”. She also works for an NPC called “Kanye Nawe” which administers scholarships to excellent Black and Coloured adolescent women studying science-related degrees.
Due to her interest in the healing arts, Hellenberg has also just completed Level I training as a sound practitioner in Acutonics® and RYS-200 yoga teacher training under the guidance of Amanda Lamprecht (International School of Yoga Studies – RYS Alliance).
