Our story
A research community built across disciplines
Founded at the North-West University's Vanderbijlpark Campus in 2010, Optentia has developed into a leading interdisciplinary research unit with a strong national and international research presence.
Our work begins with a shared concern: how can people, communities and institutions develop the capabilities needed to function well in complex and often precarious circumstances? Researchers from diverse fields address this question through rigorous, socially relevant inquiry.
This interdisciplinary foundation enables knowledge that can inform policy, strengthen professional practice and contribute to meaningful social change, particularly within African contexts.

Research infrastructure: Optentia supports its community through specialised training and access to tools such as Elicit, Mplus, jamovi, JASP, ASReview, ATLAS.ti and SPSS.

Leading the next chapter
Professor Blessed Ngwenya
Research Director | Associate Professor in Inclusion and Decolonial Praxis
Professor Ngwenya has led Optentia since 1 January 2026. He holds advanced qualifications in Communication and Media Studies and completed his DPhil in Socio-Legal Studies at the University of Oxford.
His research spans decoloniality, qualitative inquiry, media representation, cultural systems and Global South epistemologies. He serves as Associate Editor of the International Journal of Qualitative Methods and is the author of The Myth of Independence: Media Power and Hegemony in South Africa.
His community work includes founding community radio stations and directing the Tswala! Digital Divide Project. His leadership connects research quality, inclusion and the lived realities of Global South contexts.
