Hons BMus (UCT)
Mr Justin Sasman started his teaching career while still a music student at UCT, teaching at various Cape Town schools. In between teaching and playing as many gigs as possible, he somehow managed to find time to complete a BMus Honours in Jazz Performance. After graduating, Justin was offered a position as trombonist with the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra, where he was exposed to all things orchestral. He also seized the opportunity to work with youths from various backgrounds in the CPO’s Outreach and Development programme.
Justin left the orchestra in 2010 to focus more on teaching, accepting an appointment at St John’s College in Johannesburg. In 2012 he was one of the recipients of the ABRSM’s Centenary Travel Grant, and spent some time studying at the RNCM in Manchester as well as in Scotland.
Primarily a trombonist, Justin has been active as an educator, performer, and recording artist on all of the brass instruments, in various genres, and in many differing ensemble settings. He has performed at festivals throughout the country with local and international artists, and is a regular collaborator at the National Youth Jazz Festival.
Justin is now a lecturer at the NWU School of Music in Potchefstroom, where he is very glad to be working with some wonderfully talented and (sometimes) hardworking students. He is madly in love with Pippa, and together they have an incredibly special son, Daniel. On a dare, Justin has recently started taken on gigs as an accordionist, and can’t wait to see what life is going to throw his way next!
