The NWU School of Music offers its students the unique opportunity to participate in a big band. The big band is a large jazz ensemble popularised during the swing era, consisting of five saxophones, four trumpets, four trombones, guitar, piano, bass, and drums.
The primary focus is on the standard big band repertoire by the great composers and arrangers from the thirties through to the present. Swing music is the main genre played by this ensemble, but a strong emphasis is also placed on jazz-influenced and related styles, such as African jazz, Latin, funk, jazz-rock fusion and popular styles.
