Jana Mathee (née du Plooy) started with piano tuition at the age of five and took part in an array of concerts and musical projects during her school career. During this period, she was also a member of the North-West Children’s Choir, the North-West Youth Choir, and the National Youth Choir of South Africa. In 2000 Jana started her BMus studies in piano with Truida van der Walt at the then PU for CHE. She received master classes from Frank Heneghan (Ireland), Joseph Banowitz (USA), Vladimir Mogelevsky (Russia), Bryce Morrison (England), Constance Carol (USA), Thomas Hecht (USA), and Albie van Schalkwyk (RSA).
From 2002-2008 she was appointed as accompanist of the North-West Youth Choir. In 2004 Jana took part in master classes and a concerto competition presented by the New Orleans Piano Institute. In 2005 she completed a Performance Licentiate in Vocal Accompaniment at UNISA. During 2006-2008 she became a member of the World Choir as well as the World Chamber Choir and had the opportunity to work with conductors such as Peter Broadbent (England), Gunnar Erikson (Sweden), Peter Dijkstra (Netherlands), and Theodora Pavlovich (Bulgaria). During this time they also toured through Europe, Namibia and South Africa. Jana was a member of the Boulevard Harmonists in 2008 — an a capella ensemble that won the category for small ensembles during the Prague International Christmas Competition in December of that year. From 2008-2010 Jana was appointed as conductor of the North-West Children’s Choir.
In 2009 Jana was appointed as accompanist at the North-West University’s School of Music where she is still employed in this capacity. In the same year, she started with tuition in classical singing with Professor Werner Nel. In 2012 she passed the UNISA Grade 8 singing exam cum laude, and attained the best marks in South Africa for this exam. In 2012 she took part in a baroque project with the L’Orfeo Baroque Orchestra (Austria), and received tuition from Florian Kramer (Germany). During performances in Potchefstroom, Johannesburg and Pretoria, she performed as soloist.
Jana regularly performs in concerts, arts festivals and competitions as a sought after accompanist. In 2014 she received master classes in singing from Maarten Koningsberger (Netherlands) at UNISA. In the same year she was appointed permanently as accompanist and pianist at the North-West University’s Potchefstroom campus. During 2015 Jana completed the Performance Diploma in Singing of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music and passed cum laude.
