One of the aims of the NWU School of Music is to cultivate and train good musicians, primarily through performance. Music students have regular opportunities to perform, either in performance classes, student concerts, or public concerts at the Conservatory or elsewhere. Read more at Subject groups about instruction for individual instruments.
In addition to solo performance, music students are also prepared for and exposed to ensemble playing. Students can participate in several ensembles of different sizes, instrumentation and genres. Full-time music students are required to perform in at least one of the primary ensembles, i.e. Conservatory Choir (for singers), String Ensemble (for string players), or Wind Ensemble (for woodwind and brass players). Some ensembles also welcome and include non-music students and staff of the university, as well as interested members of the community.
In addition to their appearances at the annual Ensemble Concerts in the Conservatory Hall, the ensembles also regularly perform elsewhere in Potchefstroom and vicinity, as well as in other cities and provinces throughout the country.
The following ensembles are currently active at the School of Music:
Brass Ensembles | Cello Ensemble | Conservatory Choir | Jazz Ensemble | Marimba Ensemble | Potch Trio | String Ensemble | Trio Joie de Vivre | Wind Ensemble | Youth Orchestra
Apart from these ensembles at the School of Music, students also have the opportunity to participate in other performing groups on campus affiliated with NWU Arts.
