Training and experience in ensemble playing is fundamental to the proper education of any musician, especially so for players of orchestral instruments. The String Ensemble at the NWU School of Music provides an opportunity for string instrumentalists — violinists, violists, cellists and double bassists — to learn the delights and skills of playing in a larger ensemble. All enrolled string students are accommodated, as well as some Conservatory students and occasional external players.
The repertoire is pure delight, and spans the gamut from Baroque to modern times. The String Ensemble meets weekly and performs annually in the school’s official ensemble concerts.
The String Ensemble is coached by Prof Piet Koornhof (violin) and Dr Human Coetzee (cello), the school’s string lecturers, who have international experience of ensemble playing at the highest level.
