The Potch Trio is widely acknowledged as one of the top ensembles of its kind in South Africa. Formed in 1986 by Piet Koornhof, Albie van Schalkwyk and Human Coetzee, the trio has performed across South Africa, toured Russia, and recorded for Delos.
While the string players have remained constant in the 30 years of its existence, the piano position has been occupied in turn by Albie van Schalkwyk, Francois du Toit, Bernarda Vorster, and now Tinus Botha.
The trio’s performances have mostly been a tantalizing mix of the standard repertoire and neglected masterpieces, including several South African premières. They have also commissioned works from South African composers Hendrik Hofmeyr and Hans Roosenschoon.
In addition to their annual concerts on campus, the Potch Trio has performed at the Aardklop Arts Festival, and was a regular feature for more than a decade at the annual national chamber music festival in Bloemfontein.
