Two modules in Arts Management are compulsory in the BA Music & Society programme, and available as electives in the BMus programme. These modules are also available to other students at the university who are interested in Arts Management. It is presented in collaboration with the Artéma Institute for Arts Management and Development at North-West University.
First Semester:
This semester strongly focusses on the fundamentals of arts management, what arts and culture is all about and why society needs the arts. The importance of good arts management, the nature of the arts and artists, and the practical environment of arts facilities are also discussed. In depth knowledge of project management and marketing in the arts, as well as the basic principles of copyright in music are shared. The reasons why business principles and practice should have an integral part in the arts are also critically discussed.
Second Semester:
This semester focusses more on the operational side of arts management, looking at the artist as an entrepreneur, business tools in the arts, budgeting and drawing up a business plan for an arts business. Students will also be familiarized with terminologies in practice in the arts, as well as meeting procedures and tasks of office bearers in arts organisations. There is also a strong focus on working in communities in the arts and on gaining knowledge on the music production process with regard to contemporary music and to apply the basic principles.
