Audition requirements

 

(a) Instruments offered

The following instruments may be presented for the audition:

  • Singing — classical/opera • Contemporary Commercial Music (jazz/pop/music theatre)
  • Choral conducting
  • Woodwind instruments — flute • recorder • clarinet • saxophone • bassoon
  • Brass instruments — trumpet • French horn • trombone • euphonium • tuba
  • String instruments — violin • viola • cello
  • Piano
  • Classical guitar
  • Orchestral percussion

Instruction is not offered in any other instruments or sound engineering/music production or DJing.

 

(b) One or two (or more) instruments

Only one practical instrument is required for the undergraduate music programmes. However, there is the possibility to receive instruction in additional instruments, depending on the skill level already attained. In that case, a full audition must be completed in each additional instrument as well.

 

(c) Audition requirements — Diploma in Music

Two works of different genres/styles and tempos must be recorded for the practical audition.

(d) Audition requirements — BA Music & Society

Two works of different genres/styles and tempos of at least UNISA Grade 3 / Royal Schools Grade 4 standard must be recorded for the practical audition.

Please see (f) and (g) below for specific requirements if you audition for Contemporary Commercial Music (CCM) or choral conducting.

 

(e) Audition requirements — BMus

Three works of different genres/styles and tempos of at least UNISA Grade 6 / Royal Schools Grade 7 standard must be recorded for the practical audition. Auditions for winds, strings and Classical voice should preferably be with piano accompaniment.

(f) Specific audition requirements for Contemporary Commercial Music (CCM)

Applicants who audition for CCM must record two songs (three for BMus) as well as a prescribed song. Backing tracks should preferably be used; singing with the artist on a CD is strictly prohibited. Only one song may be sung a capella. No own compositions are allowed.

 

i. Musical theatre focus

For applicants wishing to focus on musical theatre repertoire, two/three contrasting songs should be recorded, e.g., ballad and up-tempo/character song, as well as the prescribed musical theatre song:

Female voices: "Home" from Wonderland by Frank Lippa
Male voices: "Strangers like me" from Tarzan by Phil Collins

 

ii. CCM focus

For applicants wishing to focus on CCM repertoire, two/three songs of different genres/styles and tempos should be recorded, e.g. one ballad, one medium / up-tempo, as well as one of the following prescribed songs.

Female voices:
I have nothing — Whitney Houston
Fear when you fly — Cleo Sol

Male voices:
Sunday blues — Langa Mavuso
Ordinary people — John Legend

 

(g) Specific audition requirements for choral conducting

Applicants who audition for choral conducting must conduct and record two prescribed** works, while singing their voice part.
