Jaco Meyer is a South African composer, researcher, and lecturer in Composition and Musicology at the School of Creative Industries and Performing Arts of North-West University (NWU). He earned his PhD under the supervision of Prof Hannes Taljaard, focusing on expanding Steve Larson’s Theory of Musical Forces through an analysis of Wim Henderickx’s Ragas. He also holds a Fellowship from Trinity College London (FTCL) in Composition, a Master’s in Positive Psychology (MAPP) from NWU, and an Honours degree in Psychology from the University of South Africa (UNISA). In recognition of his contributions as a composer, he was awarded an Honorary Medal by the South African Academy for Science and Arts. In 2025, he received the NWU Teaching and Learning Award.

An NRF-rated scholar, Meyer’s research is presented regularly at local and international conferences and published in accredited academic journals. His work spans music analysis, the development and expansion of theoretical frameworks, artistic research, and the promotion of well-being among music educators. In 2025, he attended the Visby International Residency for Composers in Sweden, and in 2026 he participated in the enuntiatio.praefatio.formulae II residency for research in music.

Meyer serves on the Editorial Committee of South African Music Studies and was the chief editor of the book Winternag: Versamelde Toonsettings. His research interests include music analysis, composition, artistic research, positive psychology, and the relationship between music, embodiment, and meaning. As a composer, Meyer's music has been performed by renowned soloists and ensembles in South Africa and internationally. He is particularly known for conceptual compositions inspired by visual art and for interdisciplinary collaborations with visual artists and sculptors. His compositions have received nominations for the Kanna Herrie Prize for Innovation as well as multiple Fiësta Awards.
