Students specialising in uhadi are introduced to the instrument’s cultural background, structure, and traditional role in Xhosa music. They learn how to prepare and hold the bow, strike the string using a reed, and produce overtones by adjusting the calabash resonator against the chest.

The module focuses on traditional and contemporary uhadi songs, encouraging students to explore call-and-response patterns, overtone singing, and storytelling. Through practice, students deeply understand rhythm, tone, and improvisation rooted in indigenous music traditions.

Students are also encouraged to compose and perform their own pieces using uhadi as soloists or in ensemble settings. Performances form part of regular student concerts, where learners showcase their progress and creativity across all years.

In this program, students gradually build advanced technical and musical skills on the instrument. This practical study of uhadi strengthens performance ability and nurtures respect for African musical heritage and innovation.
