The percussion division is one of the most recent additions to the NWU School of Music. Top-class instruction is provided by the international award-winning percussionist Magdalena de Vries. Apart from being an active solo and orchestral performance, Magdalena set the complete UNISA Syllabus for Percussion.

Percussion students are taught fundamental and technical skills on all orchestral percussion instruments, as well as interpretative and other musical aspects of percussion performance. Students are also given opportunities to enrich their percussion studies by participating in a variety of ensembles, including the NWU Symphonic Wind Ensemble, the North West Youth Orchestra and NWU Symphony Orchestra, and the percussion ensemble. In addition, they can perform in student concerts, compete in bursary competitions, and attend the top-quality music concerts presented regularly at the Conservatory.

Percussion students who complete their studies at the School of Music enter the professional world as well-rounded solo and orchestral instrumentalists and music educators.
